There
is a good chance that Gourry was the great grandson of Roudy Gabriev (made
appearence in "Slayers: The Motion Picture"). For one thing,
Roudy's last name is Gabriev. And if you look at the resemblence.. uncanny!

Roudy ALSO had possession of the Sword of Light! As for Meriloon being
related to Gourry, I'd question that. Meriloon is an elf, and as far as
I know, Gourry doesn't have any elf in him. It would explain the blonde
hair, as that is Meriloon's hair color. Roudy was in love with Meriloon
in the Slayers movie, but I believe he was also 10 years old then. ^_^;
The chances of him and Meriloon staying together at an age so young..ehh..I
donno. It's possible though. I just don't see Gourry being elven.. he's
too tall. O.o Maybe the creators of Slayers never thought too much about
Gourry's past.
*Slayers (Season One)*
"If I gave you my name, you'd get
it dirty."
Gourry's first appearence! (Bear with
me as I've only seen the series through ONCE..) Gourry finds Lina,
surrounded by bandits, and thinking that she's a fully endowed damsel in
distress, comes to her rescue. After defeating the enemies, Gourry is dismayed
to see that Lina is a "flat-chested little girl." Despite that, they become
partners and take off to Atlas City. Lina soon finds out that Gourry possesses
the legendary Sword of Light and trieds to convince him to let her "borrow
it." (Luckily, Gourry's smarter than that. ^^) Gourry's the first
friend that Lina meets in the Slayers series.
*Slayers NEXT (Season Two)*
"For once, won't you consider my
feelings?"
Gourry plays a much larger role in Slayers
NEXT. (Also the season where we get to see Gourry dress up as a jellyfish!)
The closeness between Gourry and Lina significantly develop into something
more. They don't openly express it, but you can tell that Lina is deeply
affected when Gourry is 
kidnapped
by Fibrizo. Lina sacrifices herself to the Lord of Nightmares to
save him, and when Gourry is revived and finds this out, he immediately
chases after Lina into "chaos" to bring her back. Inside the chaos,
he calls out to her, and it SOUNDS like he's
confessing something to her. (It's so sweet!) And then..finally
he finds her and..well, I don't want to spoil any more. =)
*Slayers TRY (Third Season)*
"Peace is number one!"
Unfortunately, Gourry doesn't play a very
big role in this season other than for comic relief. (He does a great
job of it, too!) The only real importance is that he still has the
Sword of Light, which Valgarv is after (along with some other special
weapons..) This season is the last, the funniest, and the weirdest
of the three. And if you're worried about what happens to Gourry and Lina,
don't worry. At the end you can tell that they'll always be partners. ^_^
